If at all possible, arrive in Antwerp, Belgium by train. It has one of the most beautiful train stations in Europe.

You can read about the history of the station here.

I was amazed at the levels of platforms (there are 4) and just the overwhelming size of the complex.

Coming up the escalators to the main level is a great experience-after time in the train and tunnels, it’s exhilarating to see the skylights and ornate arches. Of course in the main concourse there are shops and ticket offices and lots of hustle and bustle.

A recent (2009) renovation added more platforms and a tunnel under the station for through-trains. A few archeologically important features were added as decorations.

Coming outside the station, you see that it is next to the zoo- how easy it would be to take the train to central Antwerp for a day with the animals.

I loved this tiger mosaic on one of the entrance pillars. The arrival experience set the stage for the rest of our day in Antwerp.  We were prepared to see amazing sights.
