This month’s photos are from my trip to the Venice Art Biennale. For five days, I wandered the gardens, the Arsenale, and various galleries in the city, soaking it all in. I saw art from over 50 countries, from very small pieces to very large ones that took up entire rooms.
As Spring travel ramps up, please remember to be kind, be healthy, and have fun!

Wander Wednesday

brightly painted buildings of the USA Pavilion in Venice 2024

This is the outside of the American Pavilion at the Giardini section of the Biennale. There are almost 30 freestanding buildings owned by different countries in the eastern part of the city gardens. The artist chosen to represent the USA was Jeffrey Gibson, the first solo Indigenous artist to do so.

He had the normally classic exterior painted with words “the space in which to place me,” (the title of the exhibit) and “we hold these truths to be self-evident,” geometric shapes and bright colors that highlight his work. I found this exhibit to be one of the most optimistic in tone, with the bright colors, the amazing beaded sculptures of people and animals, and the combination of historic artifacts into new designs. With the overall theme of the Biennale being “Foreigners Everywhere,” many exhibits were much more somber and disheartening. I think Mr. Gibson chose to celebrate the facets of his life with color and design, and a bit of playfulness. On a rainy October day, this pavilion was a joy to visit.
