This month I’m highlighting cool buildings you might want to visit.
Wander Wednesday
“Not all those who wander are lost.”- J.R.R. Tolkien
Deception Island is a small semi-circular island in the South Shetland Islands, close to Antarctica. It is the caldera of an active volcano, and the black sand near the shore is warm to the touch. There have been research stations on parts of the island, now only inhabited in the summer. Volcanic activity in the 1960s destroyed many buildings and left others in various states of decay. I thought a black and white picture would convey the dereliction and utter desolation of this place. There is also a good colony of chinstrap penguins here, along with seals to see.
We went there on our Antarctica cruise with Quark Expeditions. I highly recommend.
This is the cruise we will be taking in 2023. Interested?
