Dry Lake Bed in Australia

This is Lake Ballard, in Western Australia. The figure you see in the distance is a sculpture by Antony Gormley, part of an exhibit called “Inside Australia.”  He created 51 human figures, based on local people in the area, and installed them in the salty lake bed about 800 yards apart from each other, an area of nearly four square miles. To get here we flew from Perth to Kalgoorlie, an hour’s flight of 370 miles, spent the night, rented a car and drove an hour and 45 minutes to the lake. We wandered the lake for several hours. Then an hour and 45 minutes back to Kalgoorlie, one more night, and a flight back to Perth the next day. When you are here, you feel as if you are on a whole different planet! Out in the country, indeed!
