Olives for sale in Morocco

This is part of the olive section of a Marjane grocery store outside of Fes, Morocco.  It’s easy to see that olives are popular here!

It is the 6th largest producer of olives in the world, as well as in the top five producers of olive oil, with just over 2 million acres of olive trees. We found olives marinated with many different herbs, vegetables, fruits, and spices, served at every meal. We were there in October, when the olives were heavy on the trees. Olives on trees get ripe at different times, so it’s common to see all colors of olives on one tree. The green olives are picked first, the black ones last. My grocery store does not have this variety of olives, for sure!
