Mountain View Marquesas Islands

This photo comes from our most recent trip to the South Pacific, on the MS Paul Gauguin cruise to the Marquesas Islands. After a long winding drive up the switchbacks from the port, we arrived at this amazing lookout. Our ship is in the bay below. The Marquesas are volcanic and remote, northeast of Tahiti. This island, Nuku Hiva, is the largest island in the group and is famous for being the island where Herman Melville jumped off his whaling ship. He and a companion bushwacked to a remote valley for a couple of months. He published the book Typee in 1842 based on his adventures here. Our tour this day took us to the other side of the mountains to see the valley where Herman Melville lived with the indigenous people.  A remarkable achievement, given the dense vegetation and steep mountains!
